Arshile Gorky temporarily leaves the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration (which created employment during the Great Depression) to work on a mural called Man’s Conquest of the Air (now destroyed) for the Aviation Building at the New York World’s Fair.

Fun Fact: Gorky was born in Armenia, now Russia, and painted Garden in Sochi, where the Winter Olympics are about to be held.
