Dear Myrna and McMenamin’s Art Team,

I am applying to create figure paintings on commission for the new McMenamin’s property in downtown Tacoma. Below, please find some examples of my figure paintings, and examples of my signage/text work, as well as my resume.

I have extensive experience painting on large wood or MDF panels; that is my preferred size and medium. I find the relationship of my body to the painting, and connections between my eye, shoulder arc, and mind are at their mutual sweet spots in a size upwards of 24″ x 24″. As it happens, much of my figurative work (unlike my abstract, semi-abstract work, and my signs) has been completed at a smaller size due to the parameters of the commission or project, though working large is absolutely my preference. I typically paint with acrylic.

To research McMenamin’s artistic brand, I visited a McMenamin’s for the first time, and found the work to be terrific. No matter the individual style or subject, there is something incredibly heartfelt about each painting, which really establishes a connection to, and level of comfort for, the guests. This company-wide style reminds me quite strongly of Trader Joe’s, where I am Lead Sign Painter. Letting the customers in on the fun and creating bonds to the community are things I strive to do with each piece I create at TJ’s, and I will bring this understanding to portraits and decorative work for McMenamin’s.

I am available to begin a commission immediately, or at any point in the next few months as construction progresses.

I am also interested in on-site decorative work. In my research at the Anderson School, I noted that there were instances of text (such as above the bar in the Tavern on the Square) incorporated into the space. At Trader Joe’s, I have wide experience in creating text, working on ladders, and generally fitting myself into odd architectural corners when the need arises. In short, I am completely at ease working outside of the relative comfort of easel painting.

Thank you for considering my work. Please feel free to call me at 917.579.9193 if I can answer any questions.

Sincerely,
Maura McGurk
