Mary Cassatt’s sister-in-law, Lois, lays out her true feelings in a letter to her own sister Harriet:

…the truth is I cannot abide Mary and never will. I have never heard her criticize any human being but in the most disagreeable way. She is self-important and I can’t put up with it. The only being she seems to think of is her Father.
