365 Days of Art – January 5: First Photograph of Aurora Borealis

Aurora Borealis, Dr. Martin Brendel

January 5, 1892
Dr. Martin Brendel, a German astrophysicist, successfully photographed aurora borealis for the first time in Lapland (now Finland). Though the photo gives some sense of the form and bending of the light, it doesn’t capture the color that is also characteristic of the natural electrical phenomenon.
